With a heavy heart :(

It is with a heavy heart I post this; we had our last visit to the cancer clinic today. There is nothing more they can do for my father. On an intellectual level, my brain knew...seeing how much he has been deteriorating over the last few months. But my heart kept grasping at hope, hope that we could slow it down or make the pain go away, but it is not the case. Hearing him say, he wished he would die already...breaks our hearts. I know he will be in a better place...but it is hard letting go. So now we are waiting for a palliative care bed, he even said to take him to the hospital. Damn this is so hard to write! It's not only hard watching him suffer, but also watching mom. There's not much we can do but be here for each other, I try to hold back the tears to put on a brave face for her, but it's getting more and more difficult to do.

I just can't believe that its come so quickly, so now we wait...for the inevitable :(

Update on my dad

Well it seems that what ever can go wrong will go wrong. My dad was ready for surgery on Friday the 27th. He was prepped, had his IV in and waiting...and waiting...well low and behold, the doctor was running late from his other surgeries, so dad's was canceled. Can we say OY! The nurse who told us, said that we should get a call on Monday and he will be a priority and will probably bump someone else. Oh and next time try for a morning appointment. We told we had a morning appointment but got bumped to 5pm. So we take dad home, everyone having mixed feelings about what happened (including spitting nails. So we wait, and wait, mom calls the doctor's secretary...and she had no idea what was happening. So instead of Monday we get word on Thursday that his operation will probably be on April 14th at 9am (probably because she was working on the schedule and the doctor had to approve.

So this Friday April 3d, mom noticed that dad's baby toe was a purplish colour. Was advised to take him into the hospital to see a doctor (cause you know everything happens after the doctors' offices are closed  So we take him into the ER, if you know about Canadian ER's you know there are long waiting periods. Luckily for us, it only took 2 1/2 hours for him to see a doctor (which lasted about 5 minutes) to find out he has an infection and get a prescription for antibiotics.

So fingers crossed, the surgery will go forth on the date we were given.

Boy, I thought things like this only happened on Soap Operas

To post or not to post.

To post or not to post, that is the question, (yea, I know, bad Shakespeare). A few of you know about this, but not many. The last time I posted about my dad was in July, and that was about him having prostate cancer. Well things have changed since then. He was diagnosed with another type of cancer also; Mesothelioma, a lung cancer that is caused by exposure to asbestos. One of the problems with this cancer is that it's hard to get a definitive diagnosis. The doctor who went into his lung (the pleura area which surrounds the lung) took biopsies and said it was this cancer. But the tests all came back inconclusive, and Cat Scan and MRI's taken later all came back inconclusive...which means he can't get the one drug (chemo) they have for this cancer. In the mean time, the pain has gotten worse, beyond what anyone should ever have to endure. So my dad made the decision with his doctor to have an operation. The doctor said he'd first go in with a scope like he did last time, and decide from there if he has to do the more major surgery...a larger cut and taking part of the lung, and trying to re-inflate the lung.

This is major surgery, and the doctor has explained the dangers of it, but my dad says living with this kind of pain is not really living, so this Friday, March 27, he goes in for surgery.

The wait has been a hell of a long time, but now that the operation is scheduled it seems too soon. I'm both pleased for him, that he is getting what he wants, but at the same time worried.

I guess it's just time to keep my fingers crossed and pray.

Numb

Right now, I think I'm numb. I've already been going back and forth with anger and depression. I found out on June 30th my dad has cancer. The doctor said he was too old for an operation. They will try different treatments with radiation and drugs (not chemo). But first we have to wait for tests to see how far it has progressed. The first test will be on July 21st and the second the 28th.

DAMN I HATE WAITING!

The doctor told my parents that usually from diagnosis the person has 5 years, but normally they die from something else. Well that's encouraging...NOT! So it's not IF he will live, but down to how long.

We just lost Deejay on the 21st and now this :( Oh yea, did I mention, my dad's brother is in the hospital waiting a heart bypass!

DAMN WHEN IT RAINS IT POURS!!!!

They say God doesn't give you more than you can handle...I don't believe that's true right now.

Well I think the numbness just been replaced with depression again.

Fic: What is This Christmas

Title: What is This Christmas?
Author: Mandysg1
Rating: G
A/N: This fic was inspired by Chopin Gal from the Samanda thread on GW. Thanks to JanSam for being my beta (yet again) and helping to come up with a title. The biggest warning is there is NO WHUMP ;)

<c> What is This Christmas </c>
<c> by MandySG1</c>

Jack shook off the snow that had accumulated on him from the short trek from the parking lot to the mountain entrance. He couldn’t believe how much snow had fallen in such a short time. Yep you never knew what you would get at Christmas in Colorado

“Merry Christmas Sir,”

“Merry Christmas to you too,” Jack smiled at the young airman; wondering how the young man drew the short straw at having to work on Christmas Day. He continued his trek down to the SGC, noting the sad faces of many a young airman. He couldn’t blame them; it sucked having to work on holidays, especially Christmas when most people were celebrating with their families.

Jack made it to the locker room, where he changed into his BDU’s, then went to check out the General’s office, where he would be stationed this fine day. Rank had its privileges’ and he didn’t blame Hammond one bit for wanting to spend the holidays with his daughters and grandchildren. Jack could have asked for the day off as well, but thought he may as well work, since he had no one to spend Christmas with, and let those with families enjoy the day.

Next stop was the control room; where Jack would get heads up on what was going on. “Carter, what are you doing here? I thought you had the day off,” Jack was sure, she had been given the day off; she was their expert and had been working very hard lately, surely she had earned the privilege of not having to work on Christmas.

“Oh hi Sir, and Merry Christmas,” Sam smiled, “actually, I was given the day off, but since I had no one to spend Christmas with, I decided to let Lt. Simmons have the day to spend with his family.”

“No family to spend Christmas with Carter,” Jack looked surprised,” I thought you mentioned a brother and that you were an aunt.”

“Ah, yes that’s correct Sir, but his family is in San Diego, and well…we’re not that close, neither is my father; so I just prefer to work on the holidays.”

“I’m sorry to hear that Carter,” Jack was saddened to find out about Sam’s family situation; the Stargate Program was still new, and there was still a lot he had to learn about his team. “So anything to report?”

“No Sir, everything’s quiet and seems to be running fine”

“Good to hear,” Jack started to leave the room to make his rounds.

“Oh, Colonel,” Sam called to his retreating back.

“Yes Carter.”

“Daniel said that he’d like to see you.”

“Daniel’s here too? Gee what’s with you people, doesn’t anyone celebrate Christmas anymore?”

Sam gave him a slight smile, “He said he’d be waiting for you in his lab,”

“Ok Carter, I’m on my way.”

On his way to Daniel’s lab Jack ran into Teal’c, “Hey Teal’c how’s it going?”

“All is well with me O’Neill; however I have noticed the personnel on the base to be rather sombre today,” Teal’c looked at Jack a little puzzled.

“Oh yea, well that’s to be expected Teal’c, no one likes to work on Christmas.”

“What is this Christmas?” Teal’c asked as they continued to walk.

“No one’s explained Christmas to you Teal’c?” Jack looked astonished; he thought Daniel of all people would have explained it to Teal’c.

“Daniel,” Jack called out as they entered his lab, “why haven’t you explained Christmas to Teal’c.”

Daniel lifted his head from an artifact he had been studying, “Oh hi Jack, and actually the subject never came up”

“Daniel it’s December 25th; and you’re telling me the subject of Christmas never came up?”

“Yea Jack why?”

“It’s only the most important holiday of the year; and by the way, why are you here working?”

“Well Jack, I really don’t celebrate Christmas…not since my parents died anyway.”

“Didn’t your parents die when you were a kid? Are you telling me you never celebrated in all those years?”

“Well some of the homes I lived in went through the motions, but I never really got into the spirit since I didn’t have a family anymore.”

Teal’c listened to the exchange, still wondering what importance these humans put into the day they called Christmas.

“Okay, that’s it, I want you and Teal’c to meet me in the commissary at 1300 hours, in the mean time explain to Teal’c about Christmas.” Jack shook his head, and left Teal’c in Daniel’s capable hands. What ever Daniel had wanted to tell him would have to wait.

*******

Daniel and Teal’c walked to the elevator; Daniel finishing explaining to Teal’c when the door opened. “So you see Teal’c that’s where Santa Clause comes in.”

Sam couldn’t help but smile, “You’re explaining Santa Clause to Teal’c?”

“Ah yea hi Sam…”

“Merry Christmas Captain Carter,” Teal’c nodded to Sam.

“And a Merry Christmas to you too Teal’c.”

“Jack asked me to explain Christmas to Teal’c,” Daniel grinned.

“And of course you had to explain Santa as well,” Sam said, trying hard not to laugh.

“So did Jack tell you to meet him in the commissary too?” Daniel asked, trying to change the subject.

“Yea he did, so I guess that’s where you two are going also.”

“Indeed”, they rode in the elevator wondering what O’Neill had in mind.

The commissary had been decorated for the season, with wreaths hanging on the walls, garlands around the doors and red and green buntings hanging from the ceiling. When Sam, Daniel and Teal’c entered they saw Jack sitting at one of the tables.

“Hey Jack,”

“Sir,”

“O’Neill,” they acknowledged as they took seats at the table.

“Now that you are all here, I’ve come to realize that none of you have anyone to spend Christmas with; while it’s understandable for Teal’c it saddens me for the rest of you.”

“Really Sir, it’s okay, I’m used it.”

“Yea me too Jack, and if you think about all the deities I’ve studied, this is just another example of one our many cultural events.”

Jack shook his head, “Look you guys are young, and should be enjoying the holidays. It maybe over for me, but I want better for my team.”

Sam gave a small smile, “Sir, it doesn’t have to be over for you…”

“And Sir, you do manage to keep us together and safe; just like the head of a family.”

“Yea Jack, you don’t have to give up on celebrating Christmas; I know it’s hard on you since Charlie’s death, but if you enjoyed once you can enjoy it again.”

“O’Neill, is not one of the purposes of the holiday to spend time with one’s family?”

“Yea…yea Teal’c is it,” Jack looked down, depression overtaking him.

“Well Sir, as I see it, we are with our family,” Sam said awkwardly

“You’re right Teal’c and Sam, we are with our family,” Daniel put his arm over Jack’s shoulder giving a small squeeze.

Jack grinned slightly, “Carter, don’t even think about making me the father to this group, I’m not that old, ya know.”

“Well Jack; come to think of it…” Daniel grinned.

“Don’t even go there Daniel, Teal’c is way older than me!”

“But he looks so young,” Sam couldn’t help herself adding to the teasing.

“Thank you, Captain Carter.” Teal’c bowed his head to her.

“Okay…children that is enough,” Jack smiled, the light hearted banter making him feel better.

“As your C.O and head of this family, I say…let’s get some dinner. The SGC is serving their best turkey dinner, or so I’m told.”

“Sounds like a plan Sir,” the group got up and headed to the food line.

“And Carter, this is Christmas, so no blue jello today; we’re going for the traditional apple pie for dessert.”

“Yes dad…ah Sir,” Sam chuckled.

“That’s it no dessert for you.”

They ate their Christmas dinner together, telling stories of past Christmas’s and laughing with Daniel and Jack adding good humoured insults.

“So same time next year?” Daniel asked with a big grin on his face.

“Definitely,” Sam smiled.

“Yeasureyabetcha,” Jack chimed in, giving a wink.

“Indeed, now could you please explain what is this Rudolf?”

The End

Weekend in Toronto

I don't normally post much on my LJ, I actually got it because I needed it for a fic-a-thon. But for I guess you would call this my first official post, (me actually talking about something) I thought I'd talk about going to The Vagina Monologues, in Toronto. I had never seen the show before and hadn't heard much about it. So I really didn't know what to expect. All I can say is WOW, was I blown away! The message this show gave was very thought provoking. It took you on an emotional roller-coaster, from feeling sad one moment, angry the next and then finding yourself laughing. Everyone in the show did a great job, I don't think you could come away from it without being touched in some way. I was fortunate enough to know two people in the show, starrgazer and minigeek (who was lucky enough to win a contest to be in the show) and did a great job. I can actually say I knew her when ;) Starrgazer was not only in the show, but also did a great job as helping to produce the show.

How can I mention the Vagina Monologues with out mentioning Amanda Tappping! Wow, did she do a great job! She had the audience in stitches, she did such an amazing job of turning a piece that is usually portrayed as angry, and putting her own spin on it, making it truly enjoyable to watch.

Amanda is such a nice person, she came out and met with her fans after both shows! She talked with us and took pics with us and really made us feel special! And this being my first time meeting Amanda, I have to say, what a special, real, funny person she is. No wonder everyone who has met her speaks highly of her.

One of the best parts of the weekend, was actually getting to meet so many other fans, many from Samsnda, and others who were from other places on the net. Spending time with Kat, Amber Moon, Famantha and Sio was something I'll never forget. And being able to spend extra time with Minigeek and scarimor and getting to know each other was what can I say, a fun bonding experience, you guys ROCK!

The only sad part of the weekend was having to say goodbye to all those I met too soon.

Thanks everyone for making that weekend so amazing!

Fic: Doohickies and Doo Dads

Title: Doohickies and Doo Dads
Author: Mandysg1
Rating: R for innuendo
A/N: I couldn’t help but write this, after a rather interesting discussion we had on the SAGC thread, discussing doohickies. So this is for all the Samandan’s out there. Thanks to RepliCartertje, for the assistance.

Doohickies and Doo Dads
by Mandysg1

“Oh hi Jack, where are you heading?” Daniel asked, fixing his glasses after running into Jack as he came out of his office.

Jack looked down at his ever-clumsy friend, knowing one of these days Daniel was going to bump into the wrong person. “I was just heading to Carter’s lab to see what she’s up to.”

“Oh okay, I think I’ll join you, I have a few questions for her too.”

As Jack and Daniel approached the door to Sam’s lab, they heard voices. Jack stopped in his tracks, grunting when Daniel bumped into him yet again. “What’s wrong Jack, why did you stop?”

“Carter’s not alone; I don’t want to interrupt her. Let’s just wait here until they are done.” Daniel shook his head, but reluctantly nodded his agreement.

“You know Sam; I thought I’d seen everything; that is until today.”

“That’s Janet’s voice, I’m sure she won’t mind us going in.” Daniel hoped to get Jack to agree with him, trying to push Jack towards the door. Seeing Jack’s annoyed looked, Daniel gave up his endeavour.

“Funny Janet, I expected more from you, and stop looking like that, this is not funny.”

“Oh yea, Carter’s definitely pissed.” Jack whispered to Daniel, putting his finger to his lips to signal Daniel to be quiet. Both Jack and Daniel leaned closer to the door so they could hear better.

“How on earth did you get stuck like this?”

“Well at first I thought it would fit, I didn’t think it would enlarge and swell, quite so quickly.”

“I am afraid I am to blame Dr. Fraiser.”

Jack pulled himself back, flat against the wall, “That’s Teal’c, what the hell is going on in there?”

Daniel shook his head, looking just as shocked as Jack did.

“Uh huh,” Janet acknowledged.

“Well, had I not tried to pull it out so roughly, it may not have started to swell so quickly.”

Daniel saw Jack’s face, turning red as they listened to Teal’c.

“I‘m afraid this may cause problems with your….” Janet started.

“Doohickey.”

“Is that what you’re calling it Teal’c?” Janet asked with a slight laugh to her voice.

“Well, that’s what the colonel calls it,” Sam added.

“How do Teal’c and Sam know what you call it?” Daniel whispered in shock.

Jack was getting even angrier now, turning even redder and tried to go to the door, only feeling himself being held back by Daniel.

“Jack, you can’t go in there now.”

Jack nodded his resignation, and went back to leaning against the wall, making sure he could still hear what was going on.

“Well maybe if we can get you to the infirmary…”

“What! We can’t walk down to the infirmary like this!” Sam shouted in shock.

“Well, then let me see what I can do here. Sam do you have any lubricant?”

“I already tried that Janet; it’s just too stuck for the lubricant to penetrate.”

“Maybe if I try a syringe, I can get some of the lubricant inside.”

Both Jack and Daniel looked at each other, their faces quickly turning pale.

“Will that not do harm? Teal’c’s voice resounded loudly.

“Oh yea, that will do harm to the doohickey all right,” Jack whispered angrily to Daniel.

“Well, we’ll just have to risk it, unless you want to be stuck like this indefinitely?”

“Ah no, I don’t think I’d like that.” Sam answered, her voice sounding dejected

Jack and Daniel looked at each other, each having a look of disgust on their faces, before turning their heads back towards the door.

“Okay, that should do it, now on the count of three I want you both to pull away from each other. Teal’c make sure you have a good handle on it.”

“Indeed Dr. Fraiser, I will endeavour to do my utmost best.”

“Got to hand it to Teal’c, being so calm at a time like this,” Daniel whispered.

“Yea, well I’ll be having a word with him, on just how he got to be in a situation like this.” Jack whispered, almost spitting in Daniel’s face.

“Okay now, ready? One, two, three, pull!”

Jack cringed as he heard Sam grunting.

“That’s it keep pulling, it’s starting to slide out.” Janet’s voice carried out into the hall.

“Ahhh! Jack heard Sam yell, as well as hearing things crashing and falling.

Without any hesitation Jack raced in the room followed by Daniel, “What the hell is going on in here!”

As he looked around, Jack saw Sam sitting on the floor on one side of her bench, Teal’c standing a few feet away on the other side of the bench holding some sort of alien doo dad , and Dr. Fraser standing at the edge of the bench.

Teal’c cocked his head to the side looking at a red faced irate Jack O’Neill and a very embarrassed looking Daniel Jackson. “Major Carter’s thumb was stuck in this…doohickey.”

“Ah,” said Jack, putting his hands in his pockets and rocking back and forth on the balls of his feet.

“Why, what do you think was going on, Sir?” Sam asked after getting herself up off the floor.

“Oh, ah, nothing really, Daniel and I were just…um….”

“Coming to see if you wanted to get some lunch.”

“Yea lunch, so what do you say Carter?” Jack was hoping his nervousness wasn’t showing.

“Well Sir, seeing as it’s only 0930, I think Sam should wait until I have a look at her thumb first.” Janet added giving the two a very odd look.

“Okay, not a problem, see ya later Carter. Come on Daniel, we have things to do.”

“Oh yea, yea right Jack, we have ah, reports to read.” Daniel supplied, receiving an angry glare from Jack as they awkwardly left the room.

“Reports to read? Come on Daniel couldn’t you come up with something more believable than that.” Jack huffed, hitting Daniel’s arm.
